Wedell-Williams 44 History: The Wedell-Williams #57 was an aircraft piloted by Roscoe Turner. The Wedell-Williams, Inc. offers charter services, passenger flights and flying lessons. It was organized in 1928 by pilot/designer James Wedell and millionaire Harry Williams. In the 1931 races, Jimmy Wedell won the second place in the Thompson Trophy event. Turner was impressed by the Wedell racer, and he contracted for a new Wedell-Williams racer. During Roscoe’s ten years of racing, he set numerous transcontinental records and in 1993, he won the Shell Speed Dashes and the famous Bendix Trophy. In 1934, Turner won the Thompson Trophy Race, was second in the Shell Speed Dashes and finished second in the Speed dvision of the MacRobertson International Air Race from London to Melbourne. Roscoe Turner is a master at getting sponsorship and his Wedell-Williams was raced from 1932 through 1939, except 1936. Smith propellers, Pratt & Whitney motors, H. T. sparkplugs, Bendix, Twentieth Century Pictures, Heinz 57 and MacMillian Ringfree oil appeared in his planes, just a proof of his numerous corporate sponsorships.
